Dr. Nicole Scheffler is a board-certified orthodontist known for her precision, warmth, and genuine investment in every patient’s outcome. She has spent her career pursuing clinical excellence at the highest level and bringing that standard home to the High Country. She believes in delivering orthodontic care with efficiency, comfort, and intention, while treating every patient like family. Watching a patient’s confidence grow as their smile comes together is what she enjoys most, and it is a big reason she smiles so often.

Dr. Nicole Scheffler, DDS, MS

education & training

Dr. Scheffler graduated Magna Cum Laude with high honors in Chemistry and a minor in Art from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY, where she also competed as a Division I basketball player and high jumper on the track and field team.

She earned her dental degree with honors and distinction from the UNC School of Dentistry, consistently ranked among the top dental schools in the world. She remained at UNC for her orthodontic specialty training, where she was awarded the Andrew McArthur Brooks Fellowship and earned both a Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master’s degree.

Academic & Research Contributions

Dr. Scheffler has maintained a strong connection to UNC as an Adjunct Associate Professor, where she supports clinical orthodontic education. She continues to be actively involved in orthodontic research, has contributed to the development of several orthodontic products, and holds patents in the field.

She has lectured internationally on advanced orthodontic techniques, including VectorTAS miniscrews, Spark clear aligners, and anterior open bite treatment. Dr. Scheffler has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and was honored with the 2015 Dewel Clinical Research Award for the best clinical research publication of the year. Her award-winning article on anterior open bite treatment outcomes and stability in patients treated with TADs was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

life outside the practice

Dr. Scheffler has been married to her husband, Craig, for over 20 years. They moved to Boone in 2005 and have two children, Brooke and Brycen. Outside of the office, she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, traveling, gardening, and photography.

An avid sports fan, she can often be found cheering on her daughter’s volleyball team at Furman University, her son’s baseball and basketball teams at Watauga High School, her alma maters—Colgate University and UNC—or her hometown team, the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

Gardening and spending time with her sweet dog, Chestnut, an eleven-pound Cavapoo

Something patients might not expect

Dr. Scheffler had orthodontic appliances from age 6 to 15 and later underwent jaw surgery in her twenties. Her personal orthodontic journey inspired her to become an orthodontist and continues to shape how she cares for her patients today.
